We received news Tuesday morning that CommunityWorx President and CEO, Barbara Jessie-Black passed away on October 19.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved President and CEO, Barbara Jessie-Black.
Barbara transitioned peacefully on the morning of October 19th, surrounded by family and loved ones. For more than 20 years, she dedicated her life to the mission of CommunityWorx, uplifting our neighbors, empowering our staff, and strengthening the community she so deeply loved.
Her leadership shaped the heart of this organization. Barbara championed fair wages, access to opportunity, and dignity for all. She was a tireless advocate for equity, compassion, and connection, values that will continue to guide our work every day.
As we grieve this profound loss, we celebrate Barbara’s extraordinary life and the countless ways she made our world better.
During this transition, Charles DeBose, Vice President of Assets and Infrastructure, will serve as interim leader as our Board of Directors determines next steps.”
Established in 1978, and known as PTA Thrift Shop, CommunityWorx has operated in Carrboro, in various places on Jones Ferry road. In more recent years, it has been also a home to the neighboring YouthWorx on Main.
YouthWorx on Main, a youth-serving nonprofit collaborative, provides space for over a dozen youth and community focused non profits.
In June of 2024, CommunityWorx faced foreclosure, and was in danger of shutting down. Jessie-Black was able to work with a suitable buyer last December and the organization has survived.
