The weekend is shaping up to be pretty busy. Naturally, we have to mention our campaign forum happening at Steel String on Saturday. There is apparently some sort of important sports game taking place at Kenan stadium and, over in Durham – on Sunday , Bike Durham, the city of Durham, Durham County Public Health and Partnership for a Healthy Durham are hosting Move-A-Bull City Open Streets!
- What: Move-A-Bull City Open Streets
- When: Sunday, October 5 – Noon to 4PM
- Where: Downtown Durham
- https://www.moveabull.org
For the whole time, the stretch of Blackwell, Corcoran, and Foster Streets between Morehead Ave and Trinity Avenue will be protected for people walking, biking, and rolling and closed to car traffic. They’ll have more than 100 activity partners with fun for all ages, and they’re working to attract upwards of 5,000 attendees. We hope that you will be able to attend.

This is an impressive event, and dwarfs Carrboro’s own open streets event, which is confined to a stretch of Weaver street, and is mercilessly forced off the street right at the end of the event ( I can’t tell you how much I dislike that!)
Based on the concept of a Ciclovía, first conceived in Bogotá Columbia (and which is now is now 50 years old!) A Ciclovía closes one or more streets for a day – and sometimes more – for active participation in riding bikes, skating, walking running. All on space normally clogged with cars.
First held in 2010
While this event is a relatively new undertaking. for Bike Durham, the roots of the event go way back to 2010, when multiple partners organized ‘Bull City Summer Streets‘ . My daughter and I participated in that first event, which ran up to – 2012 – I believe,.

Events like this are great for promoting active transportation and re priotisiong the role of cars in urban areas. I urge Chapel Hill to consider a similar event and for Carrboro to keep holding (and potentially growing ) active events like this
