CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A public memorial service celebrating the life of Jamezetta Bedford, Orange County Commissioner and longtime advocate for public education and services for individuals with developmental disabilities, will be held on Saturday, August 22 at 2 p.m. at University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. All are welcome to attend.
Bedford, 67, died in June after complications from a medical procedure. She was serving her second term representing District 1 on the Orange County Board of Commissioners and had just won the Democratic primary for a third term. Before her time on the Board, she spent 12 years on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education, including three years as chair.
A certified public accountant by profession, Bedford was known for bringing sharp financial insight to the county’s budget and infrastructure decisions, including her role in championing the recent board approval of the Orange Crisis Diversion Center.
She is survived by her husband, Edward; her children Jim, Shannon, and Kevin; her grandchildren; her mother; and several siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Camp Royall, the Autism Society of North Carolina’s day and overnight camp for children and adults with autism.
