In July Indyweek’s Chase Pellegrini de Paur noted the absence of the Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town (CHALT) in this year’s local election cycle. We, too, were wondering where CHALT (and its PAC, the Chapel Hill Leadership PAC) had gone. They’ve been very quiet!

Last week, we got some answers.

CHALT officially filed to disband its PAC on October 29, 2025 — and has distributed their remaining cash to the Empowerment Fund ($1000), Pee-Wee Homes ($1439), and Friends of Local Journalism ($1525), which runs The Local Reporter – the non-profit news organization which has close ties to CHALT. The Local Reporter has not yet publicly acknowledged that they received a monetary gift from CHALT’s PAC; typically, non-profit newsrooms do not accept gifts from PACs.
