Tonight the school board will hold a work session (agenda, livestream) largely to discuss the forthcoming budget and proposed courses for 2025-26. The meeting’s open session begins as close to 7pm as possible.

Last night, the Finance, Facilities, and Operations Committee met (agenda) and we got a preview of what will be discussed tonight.

The annual audit found an issue with Title I administrative costs

Each year, the budget is audited by an outside firm. The most recent audit found 1 reportable condition: that the school district spent more than 12% of its yearly allotment for administration and supervision of the Title 1 program costs. (The district spent 16.52%.)

The deficit continues

This is not a surprise, and we covered this in depth in our conversation with School Board Chair George Griffin last August. The general fund, as of June 30, 2024, is negative $445,968. There are a number of factors that contribute to this – state funding drops, enrollment declines, and rising costs – and the school board needs to think hard about how to right the ship in alignment with the strategic plan.

Tonight, the board will tackle those topics as well as their annual look at proposed course additions and deletions (report here.) We will update this post with any findings after the meeting.
