We received this email from PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro Executive Director Erin Riney
You all answered the call!! With school out, many in our community lose the assurance of twice daily free and reduced-cost school meals. PORCH’s summer collections are at their lowest when our community’s need is at its highest. We shared the need, and TBB readers quickly responded with financial support for our neighbors.
Thank you for covering the gap in collections for PORCH’s summer Food for Families distributions! On Monday and Wednesday, our 663 families received complete nonperishable bags with all the pantry staples thanks to you. Along with the milk, two dozen eggs, produce boxes, and gift cards, these nonperishable bags provide much-needed nutritious food for 1,456 kids and their family members in our community.
As they picked up their food, many participants voiced their appreciation for this month’s distribution. I share their gratitude for TBB readers’ role in ensuring each family received the full distribution.
Our Food for Families participants are referred by their CHCCS social workers, so all of your generous donations went to support your neighbors. Thank you for acting locally to support our Chapel Hill and Carrboro community!
Your donations will be enough for us to cover the costs of purchasing pantry staples from the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC for all three summer months–June, July, and August! Thank you for connecting with PORCH to support local families!
TBB has graciously offered to extend their donation campaign through August.
PORCH is gearing up for our fall surge in food assistance requests. School social workers send the most referrals in August and September, and we’d love to have the resources to immediately enroll families. If you can help us say yes to families who reach out to ask for help, we can avoid a waitlist. The timing couldn’t be better to donate!
