One of the most underrated free events in town for kids is fast approaching: the National Girls & Women in Sports Day at UNC. The event is part of a nationwide effort by the Women’s Sport Foundation, an organization founded by tennis great Billie Jean King, to promote and advocate for girls and women in sport.

The event is held annually in the Bill Koman Practice Complex at the UNC campus. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, January 22nd, from 2pm to 3:30pm.

Last year we attended the event with another family from our neighborhood and had a blast.

Here’s how it works:

The first thing to do is register for the event and download the release form. On the day of the event you will check-in at the Koman complex with your kids – pre-K to 8th grade, girls and boys. Inside the Koman complex is a sea of children and parents learning about different collegiate sporting disciplines from UNC’s world class student athletes. My daughter loved running lacrosse drills with the undefeated NCAA champions, and my son challenged me to an erg test with the rowing team (he lost).

One of the best parts about the event is that all registered participants get free tickets to the 4pm UNC women’s basketball game at Carmichael Arena against Georgia Tech. If you haven’t taken your kids to a basketball game yet, this is a great opportunity for them to see Ramses and cheer for the hometown team with a lot of other kids.

National Girls & Women in Sports Day at UNC is one of our favorite events of the year for the kids. They get to run around with their friends on a big indoor field and see where sports and academics can take them. Highly recommended!
